So where was I?
Ah yes, at the intersection of de-cluttering/garage sale and high school graduation.
Well, the graduation came off and so did the garage sale. But so did a computer glitch that of course I didn't count on, requiring some lengthy down time. But I'm sure that you don't want to hear about that and I'll save the commentary on the so-so garage sale, so onto the good stuff: the graduation.
This is my daughter Grace with Mr. VS after the ceremony.
She probably wouldn't want to me to go on and on about her but I will say that she makes me incredibly proud and seeing her walk across that stage made me think of all the other times that she's been on stage. You see, my daughter loves the theater.
Over the years, I've seen her as Yente (the matchmaker) in "Fiddler on the Roof," Helena in "A Midsummer's Night Dream," Frenchie in "Grease," Miranda in "The Tempest" and many more roles. Most recently, she was Eliza Doolittle in "Pygmalion."
But even more than she loves to be on stage, Grace loves to learn. She works diligently on every project and finished in the top 10 of a class of more than 400 students. She's never been your typical student, however. English and history are her passions. She was disappointed when I told her that she couldn't read "War and Peace" when she was 9 and she discovered Shakespeare when she was just 12. I'm sure she has read more books in 17 years than I have in 50.
But what I am most proud of is her character. Grace has always had her own inner compass. She is as kind and compassionate today as she was when she was a toddler. She also has a quiet determination and a can-do spirit that has taught her (and me) to never give up.
And now, the world is her stage (to badly quote Mr. Shakespeare). In the fall, she's off to college. I will miss her terribly, but I know that she'll continue to shine in her own special way.
Congrats to Gracie (and of course the proud parents too). She sounds like a wonderful kid and exciting to begin the next step in life. Enjoy the journey Gracie..good luck in college.
